7 Reasons To Visit Menorca In September

Visita Menorca en Septiembre

We love Menorca in September. The energy and magic of the island begin to change gradually, inviting the visitor to connect with the real side of the island. It is the perfect month to enjoy without stress the fantastic weather, the warm sea, and the tranquility of the beaches and restaurants, ideal for experiencing nature and tasting the local gastronomy to the fullest.

You may think that summer is over after August. But the reality is that with Menorca’s Mediterranean climate and the sea temperature over 23º, September is an ideal month to experience the island in a relaxed way to discover its usual rhythm.

Although Menorca starts to resume its natural rhythm, every corner of the island conveys its personality, offering plenty to see and do. Everything in September has a little more local flavor, from guided tours, activities at sea, or cultural events.

1. Turquoise water also in September

We cannot talk about Menorca without mentioning its white sandy beaches and bright turquoise waters. At this time of the year, the beaches are even more beautiful, since they are not so crowded and you can reach them more quickly as there is less traffic. You will find more space to enjoy the island’s natural beauty and practice snorkeling or any other aquatic activity.

You just need to decide which coast to visit: South or North. You will find well-known beaches on the South coast as Cala Macarella, Cala Turqueta, or Cala Trebaluger if you decide to explore the north coast, much wilder and unspoiled but with paradisiacal natural sites such as Cala Pregonda, Cavalleria beach, or Arenal d’en Castell.

2. Patron saint festivities, another way to get to know the local culture of the island

The patron saint festivities fill with joy and color most Spanish towns and cities throughout the year. If you are in Menorca from September 6 to 9, you cannot miss the festivities of the Mare de Déu de Gràcia, the patron saint of Mahón.

During this week, the island’s capital fills with life and music to celebrate its most ancestral traditions, such as the Colcada (Cabalgada) and the jaleo, so characteristic of Menorcan culture. The Replec, is the meeting point where riders with their decorated horses gather to start the Colcada, from the Ermita de Gràcia to the Town Hall Square. Afterward, the horsemen will begin the traditional “Caragol” ride through the old town. Horses will dance their particular ritual to the sound of music supported on their hind legs.

If you want to live the authentic Menorcan essence, stay until the end. In the town hall square, the locals gather to sing the famous “Volem Vi” (we want wine) while the town hall wine barrels are thrown from the balcony of the town hall. An experience not to be missed.

3. Enjoying outdoor activities: Yoga in front of the sea

The practice of yoga brings many benefits for physical and mental health. If we also practice it outdoors, these benefits increase. They improve energy and connection with the natural environment, greater oxygenation since we breathe the sea breeze directly and generate vitamin D under sunlight.

Practicando Yoga en la costa de Menorca

There are various classes and activities to perform yoga in paradisiacal environments in front of the sea to focus our mind and connect with the inner self. These yoga classes are perfect for improving and strengthening our body since the beach’s sand is a less stable surface, allowing us to work more on the muscular part as it requires more physical effort to perform some asanas. Practicing yoga on the beach is more intense than doing it in a conventional room. It is an excellent physical workout highly recommended and relaxing for these months when the heat begins to subside.

We suggest you attend one of these classes whether you are looking to work out or improve your concentration and mental tranquility to release tension and disconnect from daily stress.

4. Camí dels Cavalls: Menorca from a different perspective

If you are passionate about hiking, you can discover Menorca differently. When the heat is not so suffocating during September, you can walk around the island following the Camí dels Cavalls.

The Camí dels Cavalls is a historical path of military origin that surrounds the island and dates back to the 17th century. With a length of 185 km, this perimeter road with centuries of history crosses ravines, torrents, valleys, and cultivated areas. It connects the lighthouses (ancient watchtowers) scattered along the island’s coastline and is also an access point to countless coves.

5. Wine route during harvest time

Menorca has a historical tradition as in the production of wine already. There is evidence of the production on the island in the XIII century, although it disappeared for several centuries. During the ’80s, the vineyards began to recover again, and in 2002 they implanted their seal of quality, “Vi de la Terra Illa de Menorca.”
Wine lovers have the perfect opportunity to take a wine tour during the harvest season, where they can taste and learn about the winemaking process. The main varieties you can taste are Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Monastrell, Syrah and Tempranillo in red wines and Chardonnay, Malvasia, Macabeo, Moscatel, Parellada and Moll in white wines.

There are several wineries that you can visit to learn about the wines of the island. Some of them even offer tours of their vineyards and visit their cellars where the wines rest in barrels until they reach their optimum point.

6. Peaceful sunsets
